Following the deadly fires that continue to rage several swathes of southeast Australia, Maldives Parliament Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that “only a fool” will deny links between the fires in Australia and climate heating.
Taking to Twitter after the tragedy struck headlines in worldwide news, Nasheed wrote that countries must “rapidly” reduce their emission in order to get the fast-heating climate under control.
Highlighting that those who refuse to do so must be left behind, Nasheed urged the willing countries to form a coalition and “forge ahead”.
While bushfires swept through a large chunk of southeast Australia along with tourist attraction, Kangaroo Island sanctuary, off the coast of South Australia state, over five million animals were killed and badly injured.
The fires began sweeping over large chunks of Australia last year, international media reports that conditions have been severe, particularly in recent days where blazes have been razing over 170,000 hectares of land on Kangaroo Island.
Dubbed one of the biggest tragedies in recent times, the fire continues to rage out of control in many regions, forcing thousands to evacuate a coastline that stretches up to 350-kilometers including inland areas at risk in order to escape the deadly blazes. 1,300 lost homes with over five million acres of woodland being burned down.
Over 20 deaths have been reported by international media outlets, which revealed that gusting winds and dangerously growing temperatures are adding to the danger of the fires.
Further, it was also revealed that Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison came under fire for ignoring an inquiry whether the fires could be a cause of climate heating.
