Current Mayor of capital city Malé, Shifa Mohamed has announced her decision to vie for re-election in the upcoming Local Council Elections.
In a tweet on Friday, the incumbent Mayor revealed that she had expressed interest to run for another term, three months back.
She further expressed her commitment to work for the city and its residents’ progress, in sincerity.
Shifa has been serving as the city’s mayor for two consecutive years, however, she has recently been facing publish backlash over the delay in resolving several issues facing the city due to underdevelopment. As such, the Mayor and the City Council has been under fire in recent days for several promises left neglected or long-drawn out.
Further, it is noteworthy that the Mayor is also facing criticism from council members following a major difference of opinion in several issues and council decisions.
This comes at a time the current Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef has also announced his decision to contest for Malé City Mayor in the upcoming Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primaries.
His decision was followed by careful consideration and discussions with both the public and the main ruling party leadership, said Shamau.
The Local Council Elections have been slated for April 2020.
