Shamau to contest MDP primaries' Malé City mayoral election
 
He is confident in his ability to deliver and spearhead a good local governance that the people “will be proud of”
 
Shamau has been working as a public servant for six years

Current Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef has announced his decision to contest for Malé City Mayor in the upcoming Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) primaries for the Local Council Elections.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Shamau revealed his decision which was followed by careful consideration and discussions with both the public and the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party leadership.

The announcement touches down on Shamau’s confidence that the main ruling party as well as the public will weigh his 13 years of dedication towards promoting the public interest and values in integrity, transparency, equality, inclusivity and the likes for which MDP stands for.

Highlighting that he has been working as a public servant for six years, Shamau expressed his belief that knowledge, loyalty and experience are essential “in this current time of radical change”.

Further, the Deputy Mayor asserted his confidence in his ability to deliver and spearhead a good local governance that the people “will be proud of”.

Trying to remain at the forefront has not been easy these past few years, but with the support and love I have received from you all, I have managed to stay safe and strong. “Malé is us” and together we will make Malé city a vibrant, beautiful, green and pleasant city to live in.

This comes at a time MDP’s Deputy Secretary General Afshan Latheef has withdrawn her decision to run for the post of Malé City Mayor. She made the reveal via Twitter on 1 January, where she wrote that her withdrawal is the result of the surfacing of a sudden and urgent family responsibility.

However, Afshan expressed her eagerness to support the candidate for the post of Mayor “wholeheartedly”, going on to express her hope that the incoming Mayor will have many public consultations and plan projects within the input of those relvant and well as work with all relevant agencies to ensure safety and security especially to make the streets safer for women, children and the elederly.
