Theft cases increased by 1,253 in 2019!
4,525 cases of theft were reported within the past year
2019 saw an increase in theft cases by 1,253 cases
The most cases were reported during September and October

Maldives Police Service (MPS) statistics have revealed that the most cases reported to them during 2019 were of theft and robbery.

Statistics publicized by the authority revealed that a whopping total of 4,525 cases relating to theft, robbery and mugging were reported throughout the past year, an increase by 1,253 cases compared to the previous year.

A total of 3,272 cases were reported to police during 2018.

The police deem 2019 to be the “year of theft”, as the amount exceeds in comparison to previous years.

The greatest number of cases were reported during September and October, reaching 418. December follows at its tail with 417 cases.

Further, statistics revealed that the least amount was reported during March, at 271, February coming next with 305 cases.

Other cases include of traffic accidents, recorded at 2,316 while the number was at 2,007 during 2018. Statistics revealed that the most cases of traffic accidents were reported during 2016, which saw 2,241 accidents.

Greatest number of traffic accidents were reported during April, at 240, while 237 cases were reported during March. The least number was recorded at 123, during November.

The third highest number of cases reported was of drug-related cases, coming at 2,168. Similar to traffic accidents, drug-related cases were highest during 2016 as well, recorded at 2,379.

Drug-related cases were at the highest during May, at 225 and during June, where 209 cases were reported. During August, there was a drop in drug-related cases, where 123 cases were reported.

Statistics include other cases as well;

· 220 cases of Domestic Violence,

· 1,816 cases of lost property,

· 628 cases of assault,

· 400 cases of sexual assault,

· 481 cases of mugging,

· 490 cases of misappropriating funds and

· 462 cases of damaging property.
