10 cases of mugging reported within past 24 hours: MPS
Hameed pushed the public to be more watchful of crimes as authorities “do their part”

10 cases of theft were reported during the last 24 hours, revealed Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed made the reveal via Twitter on Monday through pictures. Highlighting that cases of theft and burglary are on the rise, CP Hameed stated that the authorities have increased policing activities in an effort to reduce such crimes.

The commissioner went on to caution the public to be wary of “some habitual offenders” who are at large and belong to some crime groups.

Further, Hameed pushed the public to be more watchful of crimes as authorities “do their part”.

Police statistics shows that the most mugging cases were reported from 5pm to 6pm within the past 24 hours, most of them were cases of street mugging, recorded at seven.

Further, one case was reported from a shop, one from a house and one after robbers broke into a house as well.

Statistics further revealed that this year had a record number of theft cases, compared to the past five years. The number reaches 4,525.

In time for New Years, police is conducting a special operation to crack down on major crimes. As such, MPS has assured the people of their commitment to keep the people safe during the holidays, having stationed officers across different regions in order to curb crimes that are seen to hike during year-end holidays every year. It has also urged the people to reach out if anyone sees suspicious behavior or acts.
