The Presidential Inquiry Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery is to seek charges against individuals involved in corruption cases, investigations of which the commission has completed.
The inquiry commission was formed with the purpose to investigate and recuperate losses to the state dated between 1 January 2012 to 17 November 2018, through cases of gross corruption and misappropriation.
Included among the cases are the largest case of corruption in the history of the country involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) as well as the illegal leasing of islands and lagoons to foreign parties.
President of the commission, Ahmed Assad told RaajjeMV that they are investigating several cases linked to corruption with the joint efforts from the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Attorney General’s Office.
While investigations have concluded into some cases, the commission seek charges against individuals implicated in corruption, based on their findings.
In a previous press conference, Assad revealed that a total of USD 220 million was misappropriated from state coffers in the given period.
The purpose the commission is also to ensure that all responsible institutions carry out their legal duties in investigating the corruption and abuse of power within state institutions.
