A five-day remand has been slapped on two opposition protesters who were arrested on Friday night.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed that a total of seven protesters from the opposition coalition’s rally on Friday night were initially brought into police custody, out of which five were released within a few hours of their arrest.

The other two were remanded by the Criminal Court for five days, revealed police.

The opposition coalition’s joint council passed a resolution to continue protesting until their leader, incarcerated former president Abdulla Yameen is freed, with People’s National Congress (PNC)’s President Abdul Raheem Abdulla asserting that the coalition will continue routinely protects across the nation.

Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison in late November after being found guilty of laundering USD through the state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via a private company SoF, during his presidency.

During his administration, Yameen brought restrictions to the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act which restricted then opposition and now ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) from holding protests.
