Infuriated opposition supporters have taken to the streets after their leader, former president Abdula Yameen was slapped with a prison sentence of five years and a fine of USD five million.
Protestors who gathered outside the court with placards and banners called for the immediate resignation of incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and openly threatened private media station, RaajjeTV's crew members.
During the verdict hearing on Thursday afternoon, the five-judge bench unanimously agreed that the former is guilty on the charge of money laundering through state coffers, during his five-year presidency.
Ex-president Yameen was charged with money laundering for misappropriating USD one million through state-owned Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) via Scores of Flair, a private company.
