Minister of Home Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdulla has cited the presidential inquiry commission on murders and enforced disappearances having stated that that there is no place to raise charges or arrest any individuals in connection to the investigative report compiled by the commission regarding the case of slain parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali.

Minister Imran was questioned at the parliament sitting on Tuesday regarding the delay in taking the required measures noted in the report. The minister responded that he had met with the inquiry commission members, officials from the Prosecutor General’s Office as well as senior police officials once the report was forwarded, numerous times.

Once Imran inquired the commission members whether any arrests are required to be made, they had not shared further details.

Following this, Imran had ordered the commission to conduct investigations to check whether any arrests require to be made, within 24 hours.

Further, Imran added that the PG had noted Ali Shan’s case in the report, Shan was slapped with murder charges, which were not proven due to insufficient evidence. The case was not appealed since then.

The minister also highlighted that several arrests have been made and incomplete work have concluded since the amendments were brought to the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The report noted Hussain Humaam Ahmed, Ali Shan and a minor to be behind the murder of the parliamentarian for Ungoofaaru constituency.

On 21 November, the committee on national security services recommended to take immediate legal action against those who are found guilty of being involved in the parliamentarian’s murder.

Dr. Afrasheem was stabbed to death in the stairwell of his house in the capital city, in October 2012.
