Nominations forwarded by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for the vacancies at Maldives Broadcasting Commission (MBC) have been forwarded to Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions.

Secretary General of the People’s Majlis, Fathmath Niusha, read out the nominations forwarded by the President's Office at Tuesday’s sitting. The nominations are to fill up the vacancies following the resignation of President Mohamed Shaheeb and dismissal of Vice President Fathmath Zaina.

The President's Office had opened applications for the vacancies separately, and the prioritized names for the vacancy following Shaheeb's resignation are, Mariyam Waheeda, Aminath Ameena, Imrana Binth Abdulla, Aishath Dhiyana Thohir.

Further, the nominations prioritized among those that applied after Zaina's dismissal are; Imrana Binth Abdulla, Hassan Irufan and Dr. Ibrahim Shiyam.

Maldives Broadcasting Commission comprises of seven members out of which four became vacant after Fathmath Zaina’s removal and Abdulla Sofwan and Hassan Nabaah’s resignation. MBC’s President Mohamed Shaheeb also resigned in October.

Following the surfacing of issues against the commission’s members, the committee had summoned them for questioning earlier, after which the committee decided to remove Sofwan, who resigned before his dismissal. Nabah resigned shortly after.

Interview sessions for the 36 applicants to the vacancies began this month.

Currently, three members remain in the commission; Zeena Zahir, Aminath Saharath and Amjad Waheed.

Broadcom recently addressed a letter to the parliament, expressing concerns regarding difficulty in running the commission due to the lack of members.

The committee also began work to form a new Media Commission, after merging Maldives Media Council and Broadcom.
