The Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure has opened public consultation for the picnic island designated for the Malé region in Embudu lagoon.
The ministry revealed that a special function will be held for public consultation, on 12 November.
The public consultation will be held from 4pm to 6pm at Dharubaaruge.
The government announced the project to develop Embudu lagoon into a picnic island in April.
The picnic island is accessible within a 15-minute ferry ride and it measures 3.3 hectares.
Water sports, a barbeque area, areas for children’s activities, family rooms and a first aid room will also be established on the island.
Designating a picnic island for Malé residents is one of the incumbent government’s first 100-day pledges.
Kuda Bandos, located 9.7 kilometers away from capital Malé, was the former picnic island before it was re-opened as a tourist resort in August 2016.
Uninhabited islands that are used by the public for recreational use are known as picnic island.
