Maldives Police Service (MPS) has decided to cordon off some areas near Dharubaaruge region for the Republic Day ceremony, to be held on Sunday evening.
Police revealed that they will be enforcing some changes to the traffic flow in the region, while the ceremony proceeds.
As such, police have urged the public to move vehicles from the region eastward of Dharubaaruge where the bridge is located and the area between Ameenee Magu “Moonlight Hingun” and STELCO building. Further, vehicle parking will not be allowed in the region between Dharubaaruge and Kudakudhinge Bageechaa from 4pm onwards.
Vehicles parked in the region between 4pm Saturday to 12am Sunday will be towed, said police.
The function to mark the Republic day will begin at 7pm and the aforementioned areas will be cordoned off until the ceremony concludes.
While Republic Day 2019 falls on Monday, Sunday was declared a public holiday by the government as it falls between two holidays, the other one being Mawlid al-Nabi which is celebrated on Saturday.
Republic Day celebrates the change of monarchy to a republic in the country in 1968.
There are four public holidays within the proceeding week including Friday.
