The trail of all seven charges against Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has been scheduled at the Criminal Court for Thursday.
The trial will begin at 2pm on Thursday.
The seven charges being investigated against the former VP are; two cases of involvement in corruption, two case of him using his position to gain undue benefits, a charge of using his position unduly and two charges of money-laundering.
All seven counts were raised against the ex-VP after investigations held jointly by Maldives Police Service (MPS), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Presidential inquiry Commission on Corruption and Asset Recovery.
The charge of involvement in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations (MMPRC) embezzlement scandal was raised on 29 September, after police forwarded the case on 21 September for prosecution.
Adeeb was serving a 33-year sentence on several counts of terrorism; embezzling USD five million owed to the state as the acquisition cost of Maabinhuraa island of Lhaviyani Atoll, being in possession of a weapon and involvement in the presidential speedboat blast during ex-President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
He was freed by the High Court in May, after deeming the cases to have been politically motivated and re-trials were -ordered.
On 19 September, Criminal Court sentenced Adeeb to three months and 18 days in prison over obstruction of justice for attempting to flee from his conviction earlier in August.
The former VP was also a witness in Yameen’s money-laundering trial, where he confessed that he had carried out illegal activities during his time as Tourism Minister and Vice President under then-President Yameen’s orders.
