Parliament's judiciary committee has decided to advise the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to set up a task force to investigate the reasons behind the backlog of court cases.
The decision was made under a programme by the current administration to improve the country's judicial sector. Hence, the committee has determined to bring changes to JSC and in turn, identify problems within the courts, and inquire into the root of the excessive number of pending court cases.
A report presented by the JSC to the parliament, identifying the causes behind outstanding court cases, was analyzed by the judiciary committee leading to their resolution to form a task force consisting of representatives from the relevant authorities in order to find an adequate solution.
Mandates of the committee's approved task force include identifying the reasons behind the backlog of unresolved cases and compiling the appropriate interventions.
According to the report sent to the parliament by the JSC, there are 1900 pending cases at the Criminal Court, including 12 cases that have been undetermined for over 10 years and another 12 cases for more than five years.
