Maldivian students have on Thursday joined the Global Climate Strike in front of Velaanaage building in capital city Malé.

While the strike began in front of one of the major government office complexes in the capital, it was organized by Save Maldives, with an aim of urging the government to step up their efforts in the battle against negative impacts of climate change.

Children held placards calling for immediate action to curb the crisis facing the globe due to climate change and some of their demands include bringing an end to reef, land and lagoon reclamation, plastic import as well as implementing action rather than discussing action.

Individuals of all ages participated in the strike, sparked by inadequate action by the government to battle climate change.

They also urged the government to cover the topic in the school syllabus, wider.

Alongside the capital city, protests were also staged in Addu City, Fuvahmulah and Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu atoll, with the participation of several officials from government institutions. Some of them include Transparency Maldives and Uthema Maldives which is a women empowerment group.

These protests are triggered by the government’s “all talk but no action policy” despite attending multiple international conferences and events related to climate change, reveals social media posts.

The strikes began on Sunday, and continued throughout the week.

Participants of the movement met the members from Parliament’s Committee on Environment and Climate Change.
