National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that all the families affected by the chemical warehouse fire on Friday have now been provided temporary shelter.
Speaking to press on Monday, Deputy CEO Umar Moosa Fikry revealed that those who managed on their own on the night of the fire had later registered for assistance at the NDMA and 30 of them have now been provided temporary shelter.
Highlighting that no one has been left homeless, Fikry revealed that even the families for which the government could not provide shelter have been taken in by their families.
Further, he said that all the affected families were moved to the vacant guesthouses in capital city Malé and stressed that they have been meeting with some challenges in their work to transfer the families. As such, some of the families based in Malé have refused to accept the accommodation provided by the government, such as Hulhumalé.
Over 443 were affected by the fire and it took down four warehouses and six houses. The government has since ordered for the relocation of chemical warehouses to non-residential areas following public outrage over the matter.
