Govt to form National Task-force on Issues Related to Migrant Workers

The decision to implement a policy on strengthening foreign labour regulations and address the issue of illegal employment for expatriate workers, has been announced.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced the decision after a recommendation paper was submitted by the Ministry of Economic Development during Tuesday’s Cabinet Meeting.
Said policy stipulates means through which regulations may be reinforced to handle illegal employment of expatriate workers and on issuing work permits.
Relevant authorities are required to formulate and carry out a regularization programme to ensure expatriate workers are residing in the country and employed within the set framework.
Following the cabinet’s recommendations, Solih further decided to amend the regulations on issuing quotas to individuals and companies to employ expatriate workers and to revise the legal framework that governs their employment.
The “National Task-force on Issues Related to Migrant Workers” will comprise of stakeholders of relevant government institutions and will deliberate and oversee efforts to address the issue of expatriate trafficking and illicit employment, along with several other issues related to expatriates.
