Maldives Police Service has revealed that seven of their Drug Enforcement officers have been demoted after being investigated for manhandling a civilian during a police raid.
Suspended in July were seven officers of the Drug Enforcement Department (DED) after MPS ran a criminal investigation into a video that went viral on social media showing them the officers beating a civilian during a drug operation.
The disciplinary board has since announced its verdict to demote them and strip them of their medals after careful investigations, revealed police.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed had in July ordered the police’s Professional Standards Command to investigate the case the very same night, having released a statement noting that such acts are “against its code of practice and ethics”.
Back then, the Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee had also announced investigations into the case.
On 11 September, Commissioner Hameed had forwarded the disciplinary board’s verdict for further evaluation.
The case is currently in the police’s appeal committee.
