International Literacy Day is marked on 8 September annually

Learning to read and write is the “greatest gift of all”, says President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The President made these remarks in a tweet posted in commemoration of World Literacy Day on Sunday.

In his tweet, the President wrote that reading and writing opens the door to a “world of opportunities”.

Further, he stated that Maldivians have always been avid readers, with a literacy rate of 98.61 percent nationwide.

Solih went on to urge the nation to acknowledge love for the written word.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 8 September as the World Literacy Day in 1967. The day was declared to push the importance of literacy and implant its values in communities worldwide.
