Committee approves Ali Hashim's nomination as MMA Governor

The post of governor has been vacant since the resignation of Ahmed Naseer in July

Hashim's nomination was forwarded for committee evaluation on 29 August

Hashim served as Minister of Finance from 2008-2010

Parliament’s committee on Public Accounts has approved Ali Hashim’s nomination for the post of governor at the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Hashim was summoned to the committee meeting held on Sunday, where he was questioned and all members present at the meeting unanimously voted to approve his nomination.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih forwarded Ali Hashim’s nomination for the post for further evaluation on 29 August, and he was nominated and his name was forwarded for parliament approval a day prior.

Previously having served as Minister of Finance, Hashim held his ministerial position from 2008 to 2010 during MDP’s first rule.

The post of governor has been vacant since the resignation of Ahmed Naseer in July 2019, after being accused of influencing MMA’s Financial Intelligence Unit unduly.

While Naseer has denied the allegations having said that he is being framed by those involved in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) embezzlement case, he asserts that MMA’s leadership is “still” filled with those who were involved in the case of graft.
