The world’s tallest skyscraper, Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, lit up with the colors comprising the Maldives national flag on Friday, in honor of the country’s 54th anniversary of independence.

While this is the first time the country’s flag has been displayed on Burj Khalifa, this added to the joyous celebrations that splayed the country in colors of red, green and white on Friday.

Hundreds of people witnessed the display of red and green with the white crescent in the center of Burj Khalifa for a minute at 10:10pm.

Photos of the picturesque 829.8-meter tower during the one minute have since been circulating on social media, with several Maldivians living in the middle-eastern country having expressed gratitude for the gesture.

In a tweet following the gesture, the Maldives Embassy in UAE had extended gratitude for the “wonderful” gesture, wishing for the brotherly relations that exist between both countries to prosper in the future.

The gesture was initiated by global property developer, Emaar Properties in Dubai. The company is to have stated that this initiative was taken so as to involve Maldivians residing in the country in the day’s celebrations.

Burj Khalifa stands the tallest structure in the world since 2009 and is lit up once in a while representing several auspicious occasions around the globe.

Maldives celebrates her independence on 26 July every year since gaining independence from the British on the 26 July 1965 after 77 years as a British protectorate.

Since the inauguration of the new government in November 2018, relations between the Maldives and UAE have flourished notably, with the country even having entered a visa-waiver agreement with the Maldives.

While the Maldivian community in Dubai is observably large, the country continues to extend assistance and support towards the Maldives socio-economic growth and development in many areas.
