After losing all the matches they played in the group stage of the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG), Maldives National Football Team has been eliminated from the games.
In the last match of the group stage on Monday, Maldives lost to Mayotte 3 – 1.
While both teams showed an equal performance at the beginning of the game, both teams got plenty of opportunities to score, but failed to do so.
Mayotte took the lead by scoring the first goal, 15 minutes into the game after which they strengthened their attacks to the Maldives team.
Maldives scored its only goal 22 minutes into the game after which Mayotte began stepping up their play. By the end of the first half, Mayotte had regained the lead.
While Mayotte showed an exemplary performance during the second half as well, they scored their third goal 55 minutes in. Even after having scored a fifth goal, Mayotte players directed well-rounded attacks to the Maldives team.
The match ended with the Maldives team not having gotten adequate opportunities to score.
With these results, Reunion Island leads the group stage to the semifinals with seven points, Mayotte following behind with six.
Comoros comes third with three points and Maldives team remained at the bottom with nil.
Throughout the group stage matches, Maldives was only able to score one goal while 10 goals were scored against the team.
