Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has always been there for the fishermen, says South-Henveiru constituency MP Hussain Shaheem.
The lawmaker said this on RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee programme on Monday, adding that this is the reason that a number of fishermen have signed on to MDP.
He emphasized that the party “has always stood up for their rights” and been there when needed.
In addition, MP Shaheem blamed the previous administrations for the lack of development in the fisheries sector.
He highlighted that the past governments had failed to take action to develop the sector.
Further noting that there are financial opportunities for the tourism sector, the lawmaker emphasized that fishing was the main source of income prior to the introduction of tourism.
He said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration is working to improve the sector, including by providing technical assistance and conducting awareness programmes.
The current government’s third public forum session, held on Friday, focused on the fisheries sector. In addition, President Solih is to launch the fisheries policy on Tuesday.
