President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that a bill to legitimize coalition governments will be submitted among the 201 motions involving judicial reform.

The president said that during Thursday's press conference, where he was questioned on its progress, as it was one of the pledges he had made during the presidential campaign. Solih responded that there are 201 laws under their judicial reform work that require to be introduced and among them includes the one to legitimize the ruling coalition.

The 201 amendments will be fanned out into his five-year tenure, Solih added.

During his presidential campaign, Solih had stated that his government will legitimize the ruling coalition parties by drafting a bill which will describe how the coalition must be upheld.

The four parties included in the coalition are; main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Adhaalath Party (AP), Jumhooree Party (JP) and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) which is yet to be officially registered as a party.

Further, current Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed had during the campaign for the parliamentary elections earlier this year, stated that if the main ruling party won the majority in parliament, it would work to legitimize the ruling coalition within the parliament.

Since the introduction of a multi-party democracy, all presidential elections were won through coalitions. However, coalitions were seen falling apart shortly after assuming power, as there are no laws on how they are to run.
