Island councilors brief president on priorities and development visions

Solih earlier revealed that no island will be left out of his development plan

Members of two island councils have met President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and briefed him about the priorities and concerns raised by their respective communities, as well as proposed various development projects.

While councilors of Ungoofaaru and Hulhudhuffaaru in Raa atoll had met the President on Thursday, they had shed light on several concerns surfacing for the residents due to various issues that have been left unattended.

As such, Ungoofaaru residents are troubled by their underdeveloped harbor that has cause cause problems to boats docking, said the councilors. Other concerns include improper waste management, the urgent need to upgrade the health facility and reclaim land as well as to reconvene the road development initiative with amendments to the initial plan.

The island community is also in need of a sea ambulance and to build more classrooms in the island’s school.

During the meeting with Hulhudhuffaaru councilors, they had highlighted similar such issues faced by the island community.

As such, they stressed on the issues surfacing due to soil erosion, lack of proper waste management, poor harbor construction as well as some social issues faced by the community.

Residents of Hulhudhuffaaru are in need of a youth center as well as proper policing services and health services in the island, revealed the councilors who went on to seek support from the government in order to develop local tourism and enhance guesthouse business in the island.

Having listened to the concerns raised by the island councilors, Solih assured that his government will take the necessary action to address the issues at hand after holding thorough discussions with the line of ministries.

While the President continues to hold similar discussions with island councilors across the outlying atolls, he had earlier stated that no island will be left out of the government's development plan.
