The Committee of National Security and Foreign Relations has summoned heads at relevant institutions that were behind granting former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb medical leave abroad.
Committee members had raised concerns that Adeeb may flee the country. They are to question heads at institutions about the matter.
Thus, it was decided at a committee meeting on Wednesday, to summon Home Minister Imran Abdulla, Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz and a senior immigration and police official at 4pm.
While MP for Vilufushi constituency, Hassan Afeef had requested to hold the meeting behind closed doors, Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim had been against it.
Earlier, committee members had decided to hold it openly if the heads of four institutions do not request to hold it behind closed doors.
While Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) had granted medical leave to Adeeb on Tuesday, south-Galolhu constituency MP Meekail Naseem had submitted an emergency motion at the parliament sitting on Wednesday. It was accepted with 53 votes.
MP Mickail said that Adeeb is involved in many criminal cases and that he has been accused of being involved in allowing suspects in the murder of Dr Afrasheem Ali and the abduction of Ahmed Rilwan flee the country. Further, he added that the Commissioner of Prisons must be summoned to the parliament’s committee on independent institutions for questioning to ensure that security measures are taken to make sure Adeeb does not flee the country.
