Government funds three new projects under the Indian grant assistance
Have funded several projects throughout the country thus far
It was granted during former Indian External Affairs Minister, Swaraj's visit earlier in 2019

The Maldivian government has introduced three more projects, as part of the many being allocated under the Indian grant assistance.

One of the projects is to procure vehicles required by the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) at MVR eight million from the grant assistance provided by the Indian government.

Under the first project, MCS will procure vehicles necessary to transfer prisoners to and from various locations, in a “timely” manner, revealed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The second project is the construction of a Community Center in Foakaidhoo island of Shaviyani atoll, for MVR five million.

RaajjeMV understands that the Community Center will cater for community activities including youth activities, administration space for the Women’s Development Council, library services as well as space for atoll and regional level seminars, workshops and conferences.

The ministry further revealed that currently, there is a lack of social infrastructure in the island to conduct community activities and cater to demands of several age groups for their social activities.

For MVR eight million, the third project is to procure vehicles and machinery for Malé City Council from the financial funds

While the procurement of vehicles and machinery is “essential” to ease the pressure, it is also essential to strengthen and increase the capacity of the council to carry out more development projects and deliver efficient and timely services to Malé residents.

The Indian grant assistance was provided in USD 6.9 million (MVR 106 million) to the Maldivian government during former Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Maldives during March this year.

The aim of said financial support is to conduct socio-economic development projects across the country which are of high impact, stated the Ministry. While many projects have been allocated under the assistance thus far across the entire Maldives, projects under this grant will be managed by local authorities.
