With the beginning of southwest monsoon in late May, Maldives has been experiencing consistent rain showers

Officers of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service (MPS), island council and residents are working to drain flood water in Uligamu island, Haa Alif.

Due to enduring heavy showers in the region, Uligamu island has experienced flooding in some regions.

Uligamu council member Imad Abdulla told RaajjeMV that two regions in the island have been deeply flooded due to rain showers that have been prevailing consistently from early Wednesday morning.

The power house region on the island and the region in which the MDNF office is located, has been heavily flooded, RaajjeMV understands.

The council member further stated that these regions usually flood with consistent showers.

Further, RaajjeMV also understands that the flood water has entered some households and the council has been receiving complaints of damaged property, which the council is currently assessing.

Quite recently, lightning also struck the island, causing damages to some properties.

With the beginning of southwest monsoon in late May, the country has been experiencing consistent rain showers that have been causing deep flooding over most areas. The Maldives Meteorological Service had also issued a yellow alert over Haa Alif atoll on Wednesday morning. The department has cautioned the public, especially sea farers to be cautious while travelling.
