Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has been brought to the Criminal Court for a hearing regarding his remand.
In June 2016, Criminal Court sentenced Adeeb to 15 years in prison after finding him guilty of involvement in the explosion aboard the presidential speedboat.
On May this year, High Court overturned the verdict and gave 15 days for the Criminal Court to begin a retrial. There are two more days remaining.
Prosecutor General Aishath Bisham told RaajjeMV that the office initially asked to keep Adeeb in remand until the trial concludes.
However, she said the Criminal Court has returned two cases the High Court ordered a retrial on, to the PG office.
The two cases are the presidential speedboat blast case and the one implicating him in the embezzlement of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) for which he was sentenced to eight years in June 2016.
Bisham stated that the Criminal Court has to abide by the High Court’s ruling. She refrained from commenting further until the Criminal Court comes to a verdict regarding Adeeb’s remand.
If the court fails to keep him in remand, PG Bisham said that they will have to file for an appeal at the Supreme Court.
While Adeeb has been recently freed of the prison sentences totaling 33 years, he began serving a 15-day sentence last week over contempt of court, since according to the law, convicts are required to serve their largest sentence first.
Due to his ill health, Adeeb is currently under house arrest, and will finish serving his sentence on June 13.
