Maldives Police Service (MPS) has revealed that they are yet to recover the hefty amount of cash stolen from a house in Faafu Dharanboodhoo.
While MVR 300,000 was stolen in the robbery last Monday, police media official revealed that they are yet to make any arrests in connection to the theft.
The island’s council President Ali Mohamed told RaajjeMV that stolen were an elderly couple’s savings for their hajj pilgrimage.
Along with the hefty amount, burglars had also taken a gold necklace.
The elderly couple found out their cabinet had been broken into, on Monday morning. RaajjeMV also understands that they preferred storing the money at home as they “did not trust” local banks.
Council President further revealed that they suspect the burglars were island residents.
Theft and robbery cases have been on the rise of late, with robbers breaking in and stealing hefty amounts in cash. Some have assaulted their victims as well.
During the month of Ramadan, locals had caught and assaulted suspected thieves in Dhiffushi island. Another case of theft saw a young man humiliated in public for attempting to steal a case of water bottles.
Since the first incident, police has urged the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands.
