People’s Majlis has on Wednesday passed to grant Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's request to give a speech at the Parliament during his upcoming visit to Maldives.
Since his landslide re-election victory in the ballots last week, Modi is set to travel the region in June, Maldives being one of his first stops. His visit is expected from 7-8 June.
The motion was passed with 80 unanimous votes and no lawmakers had voted against granting it.
While many members of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s Parliamentary Group spoke in favor of the motion, senior members who were elected to the 19th Parliament including ruling coalition partner Jumhooree Party (JP)’s leader Qasim Ibrahim, opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM)’s PG leader Ahmed Shiyam and People’s National Congress (PNC)’s PG leader Adam Shareef as well as Maldives Development Alliance (MDA)’s Deputy Leader Ahmed Amir had spoken in favor.
PM Modi was in the Maldives last November, to attend President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s inauguration ceremony; this was his first visit to the country since assuming office in 2014.
Relations between both countries had soured during former President Abdulla Yameen’s term. However, things had vastly improved since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed office.
President Solih’s maiden state visit was to the neighboring country as well.
