Waste Management in capital city Malé
Waste disposals increase two-fold during Ramadan: WAMCO

Company will progress within two years

10,000 households have still not registered for the services they receive

Household debts to WAMCO reach MVR 25 million

The amount of waste disposals from households in capital city Malé has increased two-fold during the fasting month of Ramadan, the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has revealed.

Its Managing Director Adam Mohamed stated that their employees usually collect about 70 tonnes of waste from households during regular months. However, since the fasting month of Ramadan began, within the fourth day, their employees had collected 140 tonnes of waste.

By the fifth day the number had skyrocketed to 145 tonnes, said Mohamed.

Further, Mohamed stressed that some households that have been registered for the company’s services are indebted to the company with the amount reaching MVR 25 million. He added that 10,000 households have still not registered for the services they receive.

The MD went on to stress that the debt creates obstacles in proficiently providing their services and that it hinders the company’s progress.

He however assured that the desired development will be brought to the company within a span of two years which will allow them to cater to the people’s needs more efficiently.

In addition, Mohamed reassured the public that although some of the company’s employees were politically influenced and mistreated in the past for political purposes, there is no such thing present within the company, today.

The company that provides sustainable waste management services for the community takes a fee between MVR 100 – 150 for their services.
