EC to begin discussions with political parties next week, on changes to Political Parties Act

Other relevant bodies will join this meeting

Elections Commission (EC) is to meet with political parties on Monday, to discuss changes to the Political Parties Act.

Other relevant bodies will join this meeting, said the Commission.

While EC recently announced plans to amend the law, citing “contradicting laws,” it has drafted a proposal.

According to the Elections Commission, issues in the Political Parties Act include requiring the state to issue funds to the parties within 90 days of the start of the year while also giving the same time period for parties to submit their audit and yearly reports, despite the law stating that funds can only be issued after parties submit these reports.

In addition, Commission member Ahmed Akram recently called to amend the law to ensure that 30 percent of party councils and leadership comprise of women.
