Council is putting in its best efforts to make Malé habitable

Malé City Council has revealed that they are trying to limit the number of vehicles in the capital city.

Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef took to twitter on Saturday, saying that the council, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, the Police Service (MPS) and the President’s Office, are working to limit vehicles in the capital city.

Further, Shamau said that the council is putting in its best efforts to make Malé “habitable” and “green”.

While the council announced plans to limit the number of vehicles in the city, they are also seen developing and opening up parking zones in Malé. With the establishment of said zones, authorities are to prohibit parking on some of the roads. Mayor Shifa Mohamed has said that the parking spaces are making it easier for pedestrians as well.

64,000 motorcycles, 4,500 cars and vans and 2,500 other vehicles such as pick-ups and lorries are currently registered in Malé.

Roads in the capital city have 39 hectares altogether.
