Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has returned to Maldives from grief-stricken Colombo on Wednesday night.
Following his departure from Colombo, the ex-President took to twitter in the early hours of Thursday, writing that his week had turned out to be full of “untold tragedy”.
Gayoom went on to condemn Sunday’s terrorist attacks in churches and hotels that killed and injured hundreds of innocent people.
In a second tweet Gayoom expressed his gratitude to the Sri Lankan authorities for the police protections that was provided to him and spouse Nasreena Ibrahim during their stay, in the “difficult” time.
Further, the former leader thanked the Maldives Ambassador as well as the staff at the Embassy of Maldives in Sri Lanka for the courtesies extended.
The former President’s Sri Lanka visit comes at a time a string of terrorist attacks was targeted in districts of Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday and the day that followed. These attacks killed and injured hundreds of people. Sri Lankan authorities have since arrested a mob of alleged suicide bombers.
On Thursday, CNN reported that forces from at least six countries and Interpol are aiding Sri Lanka with investigations into the bombings.
