This meeting comes at a time the government coalition has been observed to be “hanging by a thread”. A dispute between Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Jumhooree Party (JP) leaders led to the estrangement of Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim from the government. All four parties in the coalition, MDP, JP, Adhaalath Party and MRM had contested for the past Parliamentary Elections separately.
In the end, main ruling MDP had secured a super majority in the ballots held in mid-April, securing over 60 seats for the 19th tenure of Parliament, set to begin by the end of May.
