Maldives has taken part in the Earth Hour celebrations of 2019, a movement initiated by the Worldwide Fund for Nature encouraging all to turn off their lights for an hour.
As such, some houses and establishments in capital city Malé as well as throughout the outlying islands, had switched off their lights from 08:30pm to 09:30pm on Saturday night.
While Earth Hour is celebrated as a “symbol of commitment” towards saving the planet, shared among the people, its objective revolves around uniting people with a simple goal, to protect the planet,
In commemoration of the day, local NGO Ecocare Maldives had held a number of events throughout the week such as a panel discussion with experts of the “Intergovernmental panel on climate change Global Warming 1.5°C Special Report”, a special assembly for school students across the nation, a “Make your own bag” event, and the “Climate March” led by the Earth Hour Maldives and Ministry of Education that led up to the main “Switch-off Event” on Saturday.
While Ecocare had hosted this year’s main celebration is Kulhudhuffushi island, it was held in the “Ekuveni” region in the capital city as well.
This year’s theme is “Connect Earth”.
