Following the second fatal construction related incident in two months, Malé City Council has said that they are still inspecting the safety regulations at these sites.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, deputy mayor Shamau Shareef said that inspection work is "still ongoing" and that around 20 sites are vetted per day.

Noting that those found to be violating regulations are first advised, Shamau said that "necessary action is taken" if they continue to disregard them.

He further said that the council "is inspecting the construction sites in Malé and Villimalé, while those in Hulhumalé are being checked by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC)."

Shamau said that there are over 150 construction sites in the area.

Noting that supervisors from the council cannot be at the sites at all times, he called on construction companies to abide by the regulations.

"It is not something that should be done just because a check-up is being done," Shamau added.

A 44-year-old expatriate worker was killed on Sunday, from injuries sustained after being hit by a piece of debris that fell from the fifth floor of a building under construction in Hulhumalé.

Back in December, a seven-year-old girl died after a falling cement bag crushed her as she was walking on the pavement in the Maafannu ward of the capital Malé City.

Shortly after the incident, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ordered the “immediate review of safety procedures, and inspection of all construction sites in Malé, so that more stringent measures may be put in place for the safety of workers and the general public.”
