A 78-year-old Australian tourist has drowned in Velidhoo Island Resort of Alif Alif atoll.

The Police Media Official revealed that they received the report close to 5pm on Tuesday.

However, Police has not revealed further details regarding the death.

On 6 February, a Chinese tourist, 45, had drowned off of Robinson Resort in Noonu atoll while out swimming.

This comes at a time there has been a hike in tourist deaths across the Maldives, most of which are linked to incidents at sea.

The Maldives Ministry of Tourism had conducted an inspection of all outlets accommodating tourists but found no case of negligence from any party.
