Hundreds of litres of oil pumped to the the engine house in Maakurathu island of Raa atoll has on Tuesday spilled onto its roads.
Hassan Ali, head of the island’s local government council, said that about 300 litres had spilled onto the island’s roads.
Hassan said that the oil is pumped to the engine house through a network of pipes, and he believes they might have spilled through a leak in the pipes.
While the spill may have an impact on the island’s sanitation system and surrounding sea, Hassan said they will report the matter to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The island has a population of 1,331 people.
