Ex-Minister Nazim seeks investigation into his 'framing'

He currently serves as JP leader Qasim's political advisor

Supreme Court suspended his prison conviction in October 2018

An appeal to investigate the alleged framing of former Defense Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim has been filed at the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Taking to twitter on Saturday, Nazim wrote that he had addressed a letter to the police headquarters, seeking to investigate the conspiracy to frame him during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. He further wrote that he believes the police must bring the perpetrators to justice in the case.

In addition, Nazim had met with the Acting Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed to share the details of how things went down on the day he was taken into custody.

Expressing his hope that the institution will maintain its dignity, the former Minister stated that he hopes the institute will remain one that the people can rely on.

Previously, the Minister claimed that former President Yameen and former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed were behind the conspiracy. Back then he had stated that they will be brought to justice.

The Criminal Court sentenced Nazim to 11 years in prison on a weapon smuggling charge in March 2015 after police found a pistol in his apartment. His attorneys claimed that he was framed and jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb’s DNA was later found on the weapon.

The Supreme Court in early October suspended his prison conviction while he was in Malaysia on a medical leave.

The Criminal Court on November 4th issued the stay order on his sentence given an ongoing review of the proceedings that led to his conviction.

He has since been appointed as Jumhooree Party leader and business tycoon Qasim Ibrahim's political advisor.
