Hinnavaru council drafts plan to use reclaimed area to solve land issue

Councilor Solih said they will bring in investors to fully utilize the reclaimed land and provide housing to the island residents

Nasheed’s government reclaimed 28 hectares to solve the land issue in Hinnavaru, but the reclaimed area remains unused

Hinnavaru Council Vice President Mohamed Solih has said that they are drafting a plan to use the reclaimed land in the island.

Former president Mohamed Nasheed’s government had reclaimed 28 hectares to solve the land issue in Hinnavaru, but the reclaimed area remains unused over six years later.

Councilor Solih said they will bring in investors to fully utilize the reclaimed land and provide housing to the island residents. He also said that former president Nasheed has vowed to help them with the bidding process and that they are now gathering information on what island residents want for the reclaimed land.

Solih said that 100 plots of land are to be given out but that they receive around 2,000 applications whenever they start accepting forms. Therefore, he said that issuing land from the reclaimed area is unlikely to solve the housing issue and so they are also thinking of building row houses or flats.

Hinnavaru, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s native island, has a severe congestion problem, and councilor Solih expressed concern that the reclaimed land has been left unused.
