Adhaalath opens opportunity to contest in parliamentary elections

Those interested in contesting in the elections through Adhaalath are to send in applications and required documents before 2pm on January 20

Adhaalath Party (AP) has opened up the opportunity for interested individuals to contest in April's parliamentary elections, through the party.

A member of the current ruling coalition, Adhaalath in December announced that it will be contesting in 13 constituencies in the parliamentary elections.

The 13 constituencies are; Kelaa, Vaikaradhoo, Hanimaadhoo, Makunudhoo, Inguraidhoo, Kaashidhoo, Mahibadhoo, Mulaku, Nilandhoo, Gan, South-Fuvahmulah, Feydhoo and South-Maafannu constituencies.

Those interested in contesting in the elections through Adhaalath are to send in applications and required documents before 2pm on January 20.

Even prior to their win in September's presidential election, the parties in the ruling coalition had agreed to work 'together' in the parliamentary elections.

The coalition comprises of Adhaalath, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP), and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's Maumoon Reform movement (MRM).

According to reports, the parties were to compete in different areas agreed by the coalition, so as to 'ensure' majority in parliament.

However, at a national council meeting held in December, MDP members voted to contest in all constituencies. The party will be contesting in 86 constituencies as there were no applications for Nilandhoo constituency.

MDP's primary election is to be held on January 18.

JP will also be contesting in all constituencies, while today is the last day for individuals to apply to contest through MRM.

The parliamentary elections will be held on April 6.
