Jumhooree Party (JP)’s decision to contest all 87 seats in Parliament is a major progress to the democracy of the Maldives, says ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Mohamed Nasheed.

Nasheed said this via twitter after JP, at a council meeting on Sunday, revealed that the party will be contesting all the parliament seats.

While the Parliamentary Election 2019 has been scheduled for April, JP members may submit their applications to contest in the election before the 25th of January.

Nasheed said that citizens must be able to make their choices when electing parliamentarians to represent them and that he is assured that the government coalition will remain strong.

MDP has also announced its decision to contest for all 87 seats in Parliament, having received applications from 280 candidates thus far. The party is also to hold primaries for 76 seats, with the remaining 10 party tickets already having been given to the respective candidates.
