Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has stated that he will not go abroad for medical treatment, “even if he dies”, without facing the investigations that are to be carried out by President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s upcoming government.
Maryam Nashwa, wife of the former VP who has been implicated in massive cases of graft involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), revealed via twitter that her husband has spent three “torturous” years behind bars without having been provided adequate medical treatment for his multiple medical conditions.
Although in a worryingly unstable condition, Nashwa cited Adeeb having stated that he would not leave for medical treatment without facing the investigations that are to be carried out during the incoming government of President-elect Solih. Adeeb also stated that he will be cleared of the biased allegations put forth against him.
Adeeb was taken to Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for emergency medical treatment following a sudden health deterioration at around 8pm on Friday. He was treated at the hospital’s Emergency Room over kidney issues and has been transferred to a patient’s ward for observation since.
RaajjeMV understands that Adeeb will have to go into laser treatment if medication does not dissolve the kidney stones. So far, Adeeb has been injected with multiple painkillers and given four fluid injections for a contrast CT scan.
Doctors have since advised former vice president Ahmed Adeeb to seek medical treatment.
On Sunday, the Maldives Correctional Service took over the security of Adeeb.
The family of the former VP had pinned accusations on the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), stating that it is to be blamed for his ailing health. Last week, Nashwa revealed that Adeeb was prescribed a strong medication that had left him dizzy and fatigued. She said that according to the doctors; Adeeb's kidney stones have moved from his kidney to his ureter and is continuing to move further towards the bladder. Nashwa blamed the correctional service for Adeeb's condition as they had on several occasions refused or delayed to abide by doctor’s instructions.
Since his imprisonment in 2015, Adeeb’s family and legal team have been voicing concern over his growing health issues. Diagnoses of Adeeb include kidney stones, internal cysts and vision impairment from glaucoma as well as cataracts since his incarceration. He has also been denied a doctor prescribed cancer screening for the past 3 years. The family has been imploring from the state to grant Adeeb medical leave, with the state repeatedly rejecting them, deeming him a flight risk.
Adeeb, the second and youngest vice president of incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s tenure, is serving a 33-year prison for multiple allegations of corruption and terrorism for his involvement in an attempted assassination of President Yameen, as well as his involvement in the massive case of graft involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The Supreme Court had on February 1, 2018 said in a ruling that Adeeb's trials were politically motivated, biased and without due process and needs to be reinvestigated.
