Do not wish to evict recipients of flats, even if distributed unjustly: Nasheed

Reports have it that the housing units developed in Dhidhdhoo were distributed unfairly

'More flats are required to be developed'

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed that he is against evicting those awarded flats under the current administration's housing scheme, despite allegations that it was done unjustly.

Speaking to Dhidhdhoo island residents during his two-day trip, Nasheed stated that although it was done unfairly, the joint opposition does not carry the ideology to take back these flats.

The former President highlighted that more housing units need to be developed for those that still require flats.

Nasheed stated this as a response to complaints by Dhidhdhoo citizens regarding reports of biased distribution of flats that were recently developed in the island.

“Whatever happens, although it has been done fairly or unfairly, those living in the flats are Maldivians. Dhidhdhoo citizens will be residing in those flats. My heart does not agree to throwing them out of those housing units and giving them to others. So, new units need to be developed. Although it has been done unjustly, what’s done is done” said Nasheed.

The former President who returned to his home land on the 01st of November, having spent years away in self-imposed exile, further highlighted that President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested for all concerns of the citizens to be brought forth to him without any obstacles, going on to assure that the concerns of Dhidhdhoo residents will also be presented to the President-elect.

The issue of unjust distribution of Dhidhdhoo housing units comes at a time exceeding concerns have risen over the unjust distribution of flats under the state’s housing scheme, “Hiyaa”, which were to develop 7,000 housing units in phase II of Hulhumale.
