The Elections Commission (EC) has stated that it will decide on Sunday whether to allow former President Mohamed Nasheed and Imran Abdulla to retain their leadership positions in their respective parties.

After an amendment to the Prisons and Parole Act, the EC had declared that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) leader Nasheed and Adhaalath Party leader Imran cannot remain in their leadership positions.

The amendment states that a convict cannot hold a leadership position in a political party or be part of party activities.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, EC member Ahmed Akram said they have decided to review their decision after the Supreme Court ordered to suspend Nasheed and Imran’s sentences.

However, since the lower court’s conviction has not yet been overturned, Akram said that the EC has been asked to give a clear answer on Nasheed and Imran’s position in their parties, adding that the members will announce their decision after discussions with the legal team.
