The Supreme Court has ordered release of former Defense Minister Tholhath Ibrahim, suspending his 10-year jail sentence.
While the former minister had filed a case at the Supreme Court on November 1, the court ruled to release him until the case concludes.
The Supreme Court ruling issued on Thursday states that Tholhath had appealed High Court's decision to uphold his conviction, but that it had rejected it. It added that he had filed a case asking the court to review its decision, on November 1.
Following this, the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled to suspend the enforcement of his jail sentence.
Supreme Court’s ruling further orders all state institutions and authorities to refrain from taking any measures against the the former minister, during this time period.
Criminal court had slapped the former minister of the Nasheed administration with a 10-year prison conviction on the 10th of April 2015 on terror allegations. He was proven guilty for having unlawfully detained then Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed after adjudicators found witness testimonies and Tholhath’s own statements enough evidence to convict him.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed had also been convicted under the same case, to 13 years in prison for having given the order to detain the Criminal Court judge. Supreme Court has suspended his sentence as well.
