Former Judicial Administrator at the Department of Judicial Service (DJA) Hassan Saeed Hussain has been released from incarceration.
The Prosecutor General’s office had decided not to appeal Saeed’s case when the Criminal Court had nullified the bribery charges raised against the former Administrator.
Criminal Court on Monday decided to release Saeed upon receiving a complaint that Saeed was being kept in confinement even after he had served the prison sentence of four months and 24 days slapped on him on the 19th of July after being found him guilty of hiding from the police as they sought to arrest him in February.
Saeed’s legal representatives had stated that their client had been kept in confinement even after he had finished serving his prison sentence, following which the court ruled that Saeed had been kept in confinement after the 28th of October, unlawfully.
On these grounds, the court had declared to release the former Judicial Administrator from incarceration.
Saeed was dismissed from the post of administrator on the 10th of July and was one of the first people to be arrested after the government declared the nation-wide state of emergency on the 05th of February regarding a Supreme Court ruling ordering the release of opposition politicians and the reinstatement of opposition MPs.
Saeed is also accused of accepting a large amount of money that was allegedly used to bribe Supreme Court justices into issuing the ruling on the 1st of February releasing political prisoners and re-seating opposition Members of Parliament. Obstruction charges were raised against Saeed for allegedly fleeing an arrest ahead of a police investigation.
Maldives Police Service also states that they have evidence against Saeed in the bribery allegations raised against him. Saeed is also accused of accepting bribes to purchase apartments from a government housing project.
