There are no legal barriers that are going to get in the way of approving President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Vice President-elect Faisal Naseem’s inauguration to take place on the 11th of November, says Jumhooree Party (JP)’s founder Qasim Ibrahim, adding that there is no confusion on the matter.
Regarding the vote to be taken at Sunday’s sitting to finalize a date to hold Solih’s inauguration, Qasim said that the Maldives constitution clearly states that the new administration will begin on the 11th of November.
The business tycoon, also representative of Maamigilli constituency in Parliament, noted that the parliament speaker will take responsibilities of president and hold an election within two months if the incumbent President and Vice President resign from their posts in the middle of their term, or if they resign leaving an incomplete term.
He added that the person elected through such an election will not remain as President for a term of five years, rather for the remainder of the term of his predecessor.
Sunday’s sitting began at 9am with the inclusion of opposition-aligned lawmakers and has since gone into recess. RaajjeMV understands that the second session is to commence in the afternoon.
